Photo Shooting Tips

If you have the opportunity, it's best to take some photos with the needs of a portrait specially in mind. The portrait can be commissioned from multiple photos, so if you or the animal is not quite right on one and not quite right on another we can work from several photos to produce a better portrait. If you are choosing to have a portrait made of you with your pet, it is not necessary for any more than a couple photos to be of the two of you together.

Tips for Photographing Your Pet:

I like to get as many photographs as possible - all returned - to help me capture the personality of the animal. It helps to add notes with these photos as to the exact coloring or a favorite expression. Also indicate any particular aspects you would like included - or avoided - as the case may be.

Please note that the quality of your portrait will be greatly dependent on the quality of the photos you provide. If they are blurred or too small, I'll have less to work with. Choose detailed photos that show how you want your pet posed. If you will be sending digital pictures use the best possible setting for the highest resolution.

Your pets head must be at least 2" tall in the photograph you send for accurate detail. Your pets eyes are a crucial part of the portrait. They are what bring personality and realism to the painting. The photos you provide should show their eyes clearly with accurate color.

The best possible lighting is achieved outside in natural light. A bright but overcast day is perfect. NEVER use a flash if you want to capture true coloring. This will also cause red eye.

Take the photos on their eye level. Sit on the grass, lie on the floor, whatever it takes. If the pet will not sit still, have someone hold them in position or divert their attention. It is a good idea to have treats or a toy handy. Try to capture the most characteristic expression and pose of your pet. If they are generally happy, try to catch them doing their version of a smile.

Above all, remember to have fun and don't be in a rush! Be patient!
